Microsoft Xbox Series X (Delivery Details)

Image
I had to use a Parcel Locker address so there's a DHL-to-Australia Post handover. So delivery was extended by a day. Australia Post DHL Note: Microsoft Xbox Series X console release date is today, November 10, 2020. Yes, I was able to nab a launch unit.

Benchmarking Friday

New BIOS and GPU driver updates so have to do these tests to make sure everything is still in shape.

LG UltraGear 38GN950-B

Not really happy with the dual 27-in QHD monitor setup for movies and gaming so I pre-ordered LG UltraGear 38GN950-B today. If this unit doesn't turn up in 2-3 weeks, then I might instead grab Alienware AW3821DW which will be released this Nov. 27th. Don't get me wrong, dual 27-in QHD setup is excellent for productivity tasks. I might keep one of the 27-in QHD monitors just in case. 12/11 update: suppose to shipped out on Nov 6 but has been moved to Nov 27.  Also placed a pre-order on LG CX 48" OLED , suppose to ship out Nov 11 but has now been moved to between Nov 24 and Nov 30. At this rate, I might end up grabbing the Alienware unit mentioned above. Stock might be readily available on launch day. 17/11 update: I received  LG CX 48" OLED  yesterday so I had to cancel order for the LG 38GN950-B.

CPU/GPU Idle Temperature

Ran benchmarks to make sure nothing changed performance-wise. All look good!

Temperature Comparison - stock AMD Wraith Cooler with be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 (DRP4) Cooler

Image
AMD Wraith Cooler performance under Prime95 : CPU temp (orange), GPU temp(green) DRP4 under Prime95: Temperature improvement is very significant! I'm happy! As shown in previous post , here's CPU temp when playing MSFS 2020 with AMD Wraith Cooler: Peak temp is over 90C! Note that CPU has max temp of 95C In comparison, here's CPU temp when playing MSFS 2020 and DUTM with DRP4: Peak temp is below 85C CPU temp when idle (DRP4): When idle, CPU temp between coolers is pretty much the same Another important improvement is Sound Pressure Level (SPL). Based on readings, SPL is lower by 5-6dB when DRP4 fans are at max rpm. That's major! My post on SPL with AMD cooler and CPU at high-performance mode.

Replacing stock AMD Wraith Cooler with be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 Cooler

Image
So I received  be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 Cooler today and proceeded to replace the stock  AMD Wraith Prism Cooler . Well, I ran Prime95 first for about 30 minutes to heat up the CPU thermal paste. After shutting PC down, I quickly opened up the case and then unlocked the cam lever of the stock cooler. After unlatching the retention clip underneath that lever, the cooler assembly jolted itself loose. Yey! CPU : Cooler heatsink: I then cleaned up the CPU lid using 100% isopropyl alcohol and an eyeglass cloth: Size comparison between the coolers: Thermal paste application: Install done!

More tests (SPL, Temperature) - CPU & GPU

Image
I did more tests as I just learned that the CPU stock air cooler is set to LOW switch setting by default. CPU stock cooler at default LOW switch setting CPU (orange) / GPU (purple) temperatures: 0:57 to 1:12 - PC at balanced mode 0:20 to 0:57 - PC at high-performance mode 0:02 to 0:20 - PC at high-performance mode with MS Flight Simulator 2020 running Sound pressure level (SPL) at 1m (PC at high-performance mode with MS Flight Simulator 2020 running): Ignore the random peaks as they're from study room door being closed or opened Average around 52dB CPU stock cooler at HIGH switch setting CPU  (orange) /  GPU  (purple) temperatures: Gap around 0:22 to 0:26 is when PC was shutdown for the air cooler switch to be changed to HIGH 0:05 to 0:18 - PC at high-performance mode with MS Flight Simulator 2020 running CPU temperature looks to have reduced by around 2-3C SPL at 1m: 0:00 to 04:30 - still at high-performance mode, PC startup then MS Flight Simulator 2020 running, average aroun

Ambient Noise - Desktop PC

Image
Using a miniDSP UMIK-1  calibrated microphone, I recorded sound pressure level (SPL) at 1m away from the PC: Ignore the random peaks. They're from door of the study room being opened and closed. From 0 to 1:30, SPL averages around 46.5dB . Windows 10 power setting at balanced-mode. From 1:30 to 5:30, I loaded and played Deliver Us The Moon game (EPIC settings). Windows 10 power setting at high-performance mode. SPL averages around 51dB . From 5:30 onwards, I closed the game and PC went back to balanced-mode. With this data, I should be able to quantify difference between the stock cooler and new cooler which should be with me next week.

Ryzen 9 3900X Temperature Log

Image
AMD Ryzen 9 3900X CPU with the stock Wraith Prism Air Cooler Prime95 "Just Stress Test": Windows 10 power setting: High-performance mode (CPU min 30%, CPU max 100%) @ Idle: Windows 10 power setting: Balanced-mode (CPU min 10%, CPU max 80%) @ Idle: Windows 10 power setting: Balanced-mode (CPU min 10%, CPU max 80%) @ Idle ( 6 hours overnight ): Windows 10 power setting: High-performance mode (CPU min 30%, CPU max 100%) - playing Deliver Us The Moon (EPIC settings): Windows 10 power setting: High-performance mode (CPU min 30%, CPU max 100%) - playing MS Flight Simulator (ULTRA settings): (The green-coloured data above is GPU temperature) So from above, best idle temperature is around 45C~50C.  With DUTM, CPU temperature is around 75C~83C. While with MSFS, temperature peaks seem to hit max temperature rating of CPU which is 95C. Hmmmmm..... hope to see some improvement once DRP4 is installed.

be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 Cooler

Image
Whenever I play MS Flight Simulator 2020 (Ultra settings) and Deliver Us The Moon (EPIC settings including maxed out Ray Tracing), the motherboard emits a beep from time to time. This happens when CPU temperature reaches 90C and above. As Summer Season is near, I decided to upgrade the CPU cooler from AMD Wraith Prism Cooler to  be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 Cooler DRP4 . As of this posting, DRP4 is not in stock anywhere here in Australia so I placed an order today with BHPHOTOVIDEO . It's around A$40 more expensive but at least it's in stock and I don't have to wait for months (if buying locally). I made sure it's compatible to the motherboard: At the moment, CPU is idling at around 48C (Spring Season here in Australia, room has no ACU): Oct 3 6am update: Item has shipped out with DHL Express. Oct 11 9am update: Item somehow is still ‘on hold’ at DHL depot in NJ, USA. Oct 14 7pm update: Finally, some movement! Posting it here for future reference: Oct 16 8pm update: Go

ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 3090 Trinity

Image
The thing finally arrived!  Good news - it's not as big I thought it would be. In fact,  Galax GeForce RTX 2070 Super EX Gamer Black Edition 8GB is a bit thicker and definitely taller. This Zotac unit is about 15mm longer though and weight seems the same: Galax 6-pin & 8-pin Power Connection: Zotac dual 8-pin Power Connection: The Zotac unit came in with two pieces of the dual 6-pin to single 8-pin Cable Assembly: I have to use one of the dual 6-pin to 8-pin cable assembly: Up and running! Benchmark Test Results: with RTX 2070 Super - with RTX 3090 - That's a 153.85% difference! with RTX 2070 Super - with RTX 3090 - That's a 98.16% increase in Graphics Score! with RTX 2070 Super - with RTX 3090 - Not much difference here except for that massive difference in OpenCL: 9,387 gflops vs 37,551 gflops!
